LEAP is a student group at the University of Cincinnati comprised of students from all disciplines. Our mission includes providing a discussion forum for environmental issues at weekly meetings, participating in environmental community events on and off campus, and are the education and outreach arm of the Student Sustainability Coalition, the parent organization for UC Sustainability.
LEAP is currently working on:
0 Establishing, planning, organizing, and research for the kick-off of UC Beyond Coal. Currently, UC’s Climate Action Plan has designated 2050 as the year UC will no longer be coal dependent. LEAP members have access to participation in the current process of rewriting the Climate Action Plan, and seek to shorten that time frame significantly. There are also members preparing to work heavily in conjunction with Ohio Sierra Club and Environmental Defense Fund to protect the Clean Air Act from political entities and big coal.
0 Local, Organic, Food initiative: LEAP enjoyed great successes recently, following an event which promoted “FLOF” (fresh, local, organic food). The event showcased seven student groups within the Student Sustainability Coalition working together to provide information about how FLOF is enomically, ecologically, and socially sustainable. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness, build community, and launch a petition to shift on campus food supply chains to use FLOF, and/or to get a FLOF co-op on campus.
0 LEAP has taken on powershift promoting, volunteer coordinating, and fundraising initiatives at UC. As of 18 Feb 2011, UC leads the nation in powershift registrations.
