Driving through the night across Ohio and up through Michigan from Cleveland to Detroit on Friday with four of the most amazing women I have ever met, I was stunned and awed by the industry and power production surrounding us on all sides. Over the past few months Free The Planet! OSU had its efforts heavily focused on events for the Beehive Collective. Now Free The Planet! is redirecting its energy on new campaigns focused around establishing a Green Fund at OSU, getting the 3C rail project built, and an Anti-Monsanto campaign to get Monsanto out of OSU. According to the results of Sierra Club’s latest “Cool Schools” rankings, Midwestern institutions of higher education lag far behind Western and Northeastern schools in the pursuit of sustainability.
The region stretching from North Dakota down to Kansas and across to Ohio has just one representative in the top 22 most sustainable campuses: Wisconsin’s Northland College, at number seven. Out of all 162 schools in the rankings, 34 are in the Midwest. Out of the list’s top 50 schools, just six come from the Midwest.
The Midwest still surpasses the sordid South, which has 24 schools on the list. The West has 46, and the Northeast leads the way with 58.
The Midwest’s fatal flaw is its addiction to dirty energy. Continue reading
